What type of labels are recommended for the I-Class printer?
You may use either Direct Thermal or Thermal Transfer media. For more information on media see paragraph 2.1 of the Operator's Manual.
How do I control the print quality?
Print quality is controlled by one or more of the following three methods: Media Type, Print Control/Heat Settings, and Print Control/Print Speed. For more information on print quality, see paragraph 2.1.1 of the Operator's Manual.
How do I load the labels?
There are two types of label stock for use on the I-Class printer. See loading instructions in paragraph 3.1.1 and 3.1.2 of the Operator's Manual.
What optional equipment is available with the I-Class printer?
There are many options available for use with the I-Class printer including two types of cutters, DMXNet print server card, portable external keyboard, external media rewinder, font expansion card, international language printing firmware, internal rewinder, I/O expansion card, linear scanner, peel and present mechanism, present sensor, serial and twinax/coax interface options, thermal transfer, and USB ports options. See paragraph 1.0.2 for more information on these additional options.
The front panel display shows "Uncalibrated." What do I do now?
Perform a Quick Media Calibration as described in paragraph 3.4 of the Operator's Manual.
The display has an "Uncalibrated" message, what does this mean?
The printer is out of the normal calibration ranges. You may recalibrate using the Standard or Advanced method of calibration. Standard calibration is best for most media types. The Standard calibration procedure is described in detail in paragraph 5.0.1 of the Operator’s Manual. If the Advanced procedure is required, it can be found in paragraph 5.0.2.
Can I print test labels?
Yes, the procedure to print test labels is explained in detail in paragraph 4.0.3 of the Operator's Manual.
What do the indicator lights on the front panel mean?
There are three indicator lights on the front panel: Pause, Feed, and Cancel. An explanation of each function is provided in paragraph 4.0.1 of the Operator's Manual.
How do I get into the menu on the front panel display?
The MENU Key toggles between the Ready and Menu Modes. If the display indicates Ready, then press the Menu key to toggle to Menu Mode. Details are provided in paragraph 4.0.2 of the Operator's Manual.
How do I get the printer out of Pause mode?
Press and hold the Cancel key for 4 seconds to perform a soft reset. This will clear all temporary host settings.
What does the Test key do?
The Test key enters and exits the Quick Test Menu.
How do I cancel a print job?
There are two ways to cancel a print job in progress, one with confirmation, one without. To cancel a print job with a confirmation option, press the Cancel key. This will bring up a confirmation window. To cancel a print job in progress without a confirmation option, press the Test key.
Why can't I get into Quick Test Mode during a print job?
The Quick Test Mode functions are disabled while processing data from communications interfaces until the Host Timeout value expires.
How do I change the quantity of labels to be printed?
Use the Enter key to scroll through the quantity options. You may choose to print 2, 100, 1000, or 9999 with the Enter key.
How do I find out what the messages mean?
There are two types of messages displayed, User Prompts alert the operator to a required action, and Condition Messages indicate an operational state. The messages displayed by the I-Class printer are explained in detail in paragraph 4.2.1 of the Operator's Manual.
The print quality of my labels is poor, is there a Print Quality test available?
Yes, to print a Quality Test label, press the Test key to enter test mode, press the FWD key to advance to the Print Quality Label option, press the ENT key to select a quantity, and then press the Test Key to start printing. A sample of the Print Quality Test label is provided in paragraph 4.3.1 of the Operator's Manual.
How do I test the print ribbon?
To quickly test the print ribbon, press the Test key, using the FWD key scroll to Ribbon Test Label, press the ENT key to select a quantity, and then press the Test key to start printing. A sample of the Quick Ribbon Test label is provided in paragraph 4.3.3 of the Operator's Manual.
Is there a Dot Test Pattern function available on the I-Class printer?
Yes, to access the Dot Test Pattern function, press the Test key, scroll to the Dot Test Pattern using the FWD key, press ENT to select a quantity, and the press the Test key to start printing. A sample of the Dot Test Pattern label is provided in paragraph 4.3.4 of the Operator's Manual.
Why has the format of my last label been lost?
This is likely caused by a job that was cancelled prior to its completion, or loss of power since the last print job.
How can I adjust the Printheads?
To ensure consistent print quality over a wide range of media types and dimensions, the I-Class printer is equipped with a Leveling Cam adjustment and a Burn Line adjustment. These adjustment procedures are provided in paragraphs 5.1.1 and 5.1.2, respectively, in the Operator's Manual.
If I change the width of my label media, do I need to adjust the Leveling Cam?
Yes, anytime you change to a different width of printing media, you must adjust the Leveling Cam. Follow the procedure provided in paragraph 5.1.1 of the Operator's Manual.
Why is my printer ribbon wrinkled?
Likely, the Leveling Cam is under adjusted. To adjust the Leveling Cam, follow the procedure provided in paragraph 5.1.1 of the Operator's Manual.
Why are the Platen and/or Printhead are showing wear?
Under adjustment of the leveling cam will cause undo wear on your platen and/or Printhead. To adjust the leveling cam, follow the procedure provided in paragraph 5.1.1 of the Operator's Manual.
I have changed to a heavier label stock and the print quality has deteriorated. What can I do?
Typically, thicker media requires a slight forward adjustment of the Burn Line, while thinner media requires a slight backward adjustment. First, try the suggestions in paragraphs 2.1.1 and 5.3.1. If print quality remains unacceptable, an adjustment may be required. The I-Class printer manufacturer recommends that you contact a qualified technician or Datamax Technical Support before attempting this procedure. The Burn Line adjustment procedure is provided in paragraph 5.1.3 of the Operator's Manual.
How do I clean the Printhead?
The Printhead may be cleaned by following the procedure provided in paragraph 5.3.1 of the Operator's Manual.
My Printhead needs to be replaced, can I replace it myself?
Yes, however, remember that Printheads are fragile; use extreme care when handling them, and never use a sharp object on the surface. The procedure to replace the Printhead is provided in paragraph 5.2 of the Operator's Manual. As always, if you have questions, contact a qualified technician or Datamax Technical Support before attempting this procedure.
Can the Platen Roller be cleaned?
Yes, you can clean the Platen Roller by following the procedure provided in paragraph 5.3.2 of the Opertor's Manual. Remember, NEVER use a sharp object to clean the Platen Roller, follow the procedures exactly.
How should I clean the I-Class printer?
General interior and exterior cleaning procedures are provided in paragraph 5.3.3 of the Operator's Manual.
Are updates to the application program provided for the I-Class printer?
Yes, there are two methods of updating applications, Ready Mode and by Download. Updates can be downloaded through any printer interface port. You may find available updates at ftp://ftp.datamaxcorp.com. You may also find more information on both methods of updating the application software in paragraph 5.4 of the Operator's Manual.
Where can I find information on error messages?
There is a complete table of Error Messages and Descriptions/Causes/Solutions information in paragraph 5.4.3 of the Operator's Manual.
Are there regular maintenance procedures that I need to perform to keep my I-Class printer in good working condition?
Yes, there are multiple maintenance procedures that will help extend the life of your printer. These procedures can be found in paragraph 5.3 of the Operator's Manual.
While I was updating the Boot Loader program, the power went out, and now my printer won't work, what do I do?
If power is lost while Upgrading Software is displayed and the printer is non-functional, it must be returned to the factory for programming or the main logic board must be replaced.
Where can I find Troubleshooting information?
An extensive list of troubleshooting information is provided in paragraph 6.0 of the Operator's Manual.
I am getting a Fault message, but I don't understand what it means. Where can I find some more information?
Printer Fault and Warning Messages, a Description, and Possible Solutions are provided in table format in paragraph 6.1 of the Operator’s Manual.
Can I do a Hex Dump to diagnose my problem?
Yes, however, this is not to be done by amateurs. The procedure to complete a Hex Dump is provided in paragraph 6.2 of the Operator's Manual. It is essential that the I & W Class Programmer's Manual is used for reference in diagnosing problems through use of the Hex Dump.
How do I get out of the Hex Dump Mode?
To return to Ready Mode, re-enter the Diagnostics Menu and disable the Hex Dump Mode, exit the menu, and then save the changes.
Where can I find the specifications for the I=Class Printer?
All available General Specifications for the I-Class printer are provided in paragraph 7.0 of the Operator's Manual.
What fonts are available on the I-Class Printer?
All available fonts are provided in Appendix B of the Operator's Manual, along with their respective ASCII codes.
What languages does the I-Class Printer support?
